Dorothy Mae Shantz (Wanner) passed away peacefully at her residence Nithview Home, New Hamburg on Wednesday, May 1, 2019. She was born 92 years ago, the youngest daughter of the late Wilfred and Lauretta (Fried) Wanner and was the last surviving member of her family. She was the loved wife of Melvin Shantz, who predeceased her in 2005. Together they operated a dairy farm (Meldoe Farm) and were vendors at the Kitchener Farmers Market for over 40 years. Dorothy was predeceased by her brothers and sisters Willard Becker (Kathleen), Margaret (Oliver Bean), Myrtle (Peter van der Schoot, Lorne Rosenburger), Ward Becker (Helen), Susie Good (Leroy Good, Wayne Shantz), Cleo (Harry Brodhaecker), Ivy (Elgin Musselman) and Reta (John Hofstetter, Margaret Hofstetter), as well as her parents-in-law Samuel and Mary Shantz, and her brothers and sisters-in-law Lemore Shantz, Arthur and Olive Lichty, Joyce and Laverne Witmer and Kenneth and Lorene Shantz. She is survived and fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews and their families. She was always appreciative of their visits and enjoyed sharing stories and laughter. Dorothy’s family and faith community were very important to her. She was a member of the Mannheim Mennonite Church and for many years was a participant of the Mannheim Seniors Group, Lawn Bowling Leagues and Crokinole Club.
A visitation and celebration of life will be held at the Mannheim Mennonite Church on Saturday May 4, 2019. Visitation will take place from 9:30 – 11:00a.m. followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in the adjoining church cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee or a charity of one’s choice (Cheques Accepted).
